Thinking about the sheer volume of information — stories, images, videos, data — available from The New York Times can evoke a simultaneous glee and terror. It is simply impossible for readers to see them all.   The task for beta620, the Times experimental projects group, launched Deep Dive that uses the Times’ massive cache of metadata from stories to go, as the name suggests, deeper into a news event by pulling together related articles. So Deep Dive would provides readers a collection of stories relating to a topic, based on whatever person, place, event or topic of their choosing.   What’s interesting about Deep Dive? At least three things: 1) Deep Dive relies on the extensive tagging system the Times uses for all its stories and makes the Times Topics pages possible. As part of the editing flow tags are applied to stories by editors or producers, with suggestions provided by an internal algorithm. Deep Dive looks for connections among topics.   2) Deep Dive’ unique interfact, where the related articles flow into the same frame as the main story when selected. You need never leave the page; jumping backwards or forwards in articles all happens in the same space. That’s a departure from the pageview-driven way most news sites are designed. Check vooral de video op de homepage.   Parse.ly Dash lijkt me een erg vette tool om efficienter te achterhalen wat er zoal aan trending topics te verwachten zijn. Ideaal voor iedereen die zich bezig houdt met het brengen van het laatste nieuws en de meeste interessante onderwerpen.   Een soort Google Analytics maar dan helemaal web3.0 Zowel voorspellende als semantische eigenschappen worden ingezet om een heel stuk beter te analyseren wat er bij het globale internet blijft resoneren.   Ohja, het ‘beest’ kost wel minimaal 500 dollar per maand… Oefff

Pinterest, laatste hype in Amerika.   Je zou haast gaan vermoeden dat we “met z’n allen” nogal social media moe beginnen te worden. Niets is minder waar met het nieuwe Pinterest.    Een eerste blik op de site geeft me persoonlijk direct het gevoel; wat een onzin. Om vervolgens nog nét mijn woorden in te slikken, voordat ik ze uitspreek. Want is het niet zo dat de meest disruptieve diensten van onze tijd hun leven startten met een onbekende toekomst?   Neem nu Twitter. Volgens mij zijn er op dit moment nog behoorlijk wat laggerts die zich nog steeds afvragen waar het precies voor dient. Ach; wij weten wel beter niewaar?!   Maar even uitleggen wat u kunt doen met Pinterest. Hou u vast aan den tafel, zet desnoods de bureaustoel in een lage stand, zodat u niet te hard van uw stoel valt…komt ie:   Met Pinterest is het bijvoorbeeld mogelijk om;   – inspiratie op te doen voor je nieuwe woninginrichting - Nieuwe recepten te vinden en te bewaren - Prachtige foto’s van vakantiebestemmingen te vinden - De laatste mode trends te volgen     Je zou je met deze opsomming eigenlijk al direct moeten schamen als je Pinterest gebruiker bent   Maar misschien komen er ook nieuwe mogelijkheden naar boven in de loop der tijd, waar de makers misschien niet direct op gerekend hadden.   Laten we daarom eens begin maken om de immer populaire infographic te posten.. Ik noem maar iets…
